Aftercare guide

Healing, step by step

Your artist has finished the tattoo, and now it is your turn: good care in the next few weeks is what makes it heal well. Your artist will tell you which healing method you have and may add instructions for your specific piece, so always follow their advice first.

The first days

Two ways to heal

Whichever method you have, treat a fresh tattoo like an open wound for the first few days: clean hands, clean skin, nothing rubbing against it. Once it is uncovered, moisturizing is the same for both: a thin layer 4-5 times a day for about 2-3 weeks, until the peeling is gone.

Second skin

Covered with a clear, breathable protective film.

  1. Leave the film on for about 3-5 days, or as long as your artist recommends.
  2. Some fluid and ink building up under the film is completely normal. But if the film peels away at the edges and starts to expose the tattoo, or if it leaks, take it off right away: once the seal is open, dirt and bacteria can get in.
  3. To remove it, stand under warm running water and peel it back slowly along the skin, not straight up.
  4. Wash the tattoo gently with antibacterial soap and pat dry with a clean paper towel.
  5. From then on, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer 4-5 times a day until the peeling is gone, usually about 2-3 weeks.

Classic healing

Covered with a pad or wrap at the studio.

  1. Once you are home, wash your hands and gently remove the pad.
  2. Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and antibacterial soap, using only your fingertips. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. You can re-cover it with a fresh pad.
  3. For the first 3 days, wash the tattoo several times a day and keep it from rubbing against clothes or bedding.
  4. From day 4, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer 4-5 times a day. A thin layer is enough: the skin should look soft, not shiny or wet.
  5. Keep washing gently and moisturizing 4-5 times a day until the peeling is gone, usually about 2-3 weeks.
What to expect

The healing timeline

Every body heals at its own pace, and densely packed color or larger pieces usually take a little longer. This is what a typical healing looks like.

  1. Days 1-3Fresh

Redness, warmth and light swelling are normal. The tattoo may weep clear fluid and some ink. Keep it clean and avoid friction.

  2. Days 4-14Peeling

The skin flakes and itches. Let the flakes fall off on their own. Do not pick or scratch: a light tap or a little moisturizer helps.

  3. Weeks 2-4Settling

The surface is closed, but the tattoo can look slightly cloudy or dull. This milky layer clears as the skin finishes renewing.

  4. Month 2 and onHealed

The deeper layers have healed and the colors show their true brightness. Now it is all about protecting it from the sun.

The rules

Do and avoid

Most healing problems come from a few simple things. Keep these in mind for the first 3-4 weeks.

Do

  • Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
  • Take short, lukewarm showers.
  • Wear loose, clean clothes over the tattooed area.
  • Sleep on clean sheets and try not to lie on the tattoo.
  • Use unscented moisturizer in a thin layer.
  • Once healed, use SPF 50 sunscreen on your tattoo every time it sees the sun.

Avoid

  • Picking, scratching or peeling the flakes.
  • Soaking: pools, baths, hot tubs, the ocean and saunas.
  • Direct sun and tanning beds.
  • Tight clothes, straps or shoes rubbing the area.
  • Heavy layers of ointment, scented lotions and alcohol-based products.
  • Intense workouts that stretch or rub the tattoo during the first days.
Important

When to see a doctor

Some redness and tenderness in the first days are part of healing. If you notice severe or spreading redness, swelling that gets worse after the first few days, pus, a bad smell, fever, or anything that worries you, see a doctor right away, then let your artist know. We would always rather hear from you early.

Questions

Aftercare FAQ

More answers about booking, design and your session are on our FAQ page.

Can I shower with a new tattoo?

Yes. Keep showers short and lukewarm, let the water run over the tattoo rather than spraying it directly, and pat it dry with a clean paper towel afterwards. Just avoid soaking it in a bath.

Which moisturizer should I use?

Any gentle, fragrance-free lotion or a tattoo aftercare balm works well. Ask your artist if they have a favorite. The key is a thin layer: too much product can trap moisture and slow healing.

When can I go swimming or work out?

Wait about 3-4 weeks before swimming or soaking. For workouts, give your skin a few days, avoid exercises that stretch or rub the tattoo, and wash it gently after you sweat.

My tattoo looks cloudy. Is that normal?

Yes. A slightly milky or dull look in weeks 2-4 is a normal part of healing. It clears on its own as the new skin settles.

What if something looks uneven after healing?

Give it the full healing time first, then send a photo to your artist. They will take a look and let you know if a touch-up is needed.
